WhatsApp photos and the chats you export, kept safe

A lot of family life arrives on WhatsApp: photos, videos, documents and voice notes. Here's honestly what triplicate does, and what WhatsApp's own backup does.

A phone with chat bubbles and a photo, sending an exported folder to a stack of white, pink and yellow copies.

What you have, and where it lives

Usually one copy, in one place. That's the part we fix.

WhatWhere it usually is
Photos, videos and documents received on chatThe WhatsApp media folders on your phone
Chat historyWhatsApp's own backup to Google Drive or iCloud, if it's turned on
Important chats you want to keepInside the app only, unless exported
Voice notes from familyThe WhatsApp media folders

How it usually gets lost

  • WhatsApp's own chat backup isn't turned on, or stopped running a while ago, and a phone is lost.
  • Media is cleared to free space and the only copy of a photo sent by a relative is gone.
  • Moving between Android and iPhone, not everything comes across.
  • A chat with documents or instructions from a parent is deleted.

What we back up

You choose what goes up. Copy one stays on your phone or laptop; copies two and three go to two storage providers you choose, one of them on another continent (Mumbai or Hyderabad if your data must stay in India).

Media on Android

Pick the WhatsApp media folders on Android, and photos, videos and documents are backed up with the rest of your phone.

Exported chats

Export a chat from WhatsApp into a folder you've chosen to back up, and we keep a copy.

Not chats directly

We don't back up WhatsApp chats themselves. WhatsApp has its own chat backup to Google Drive or iCloud; keep that turned on.

Encrypted

Everything is encrypted on the phone before upload.

Good habits, with or without us

  • Turn on WhatsApp's own chat backup in its settings, and check it has run recently.
  • Export chats that matter, such as a parent's voice notes or instructions, from time to time.
  • Ask for important documents as files, not only as photos in a chat.
  • Print the recovery kit you get at setup and keep it with your other important papers. Your files are encrypted on your phone before upload and we can't reset your passphrase, so the kit is how you get back in.

How it works

  1. 1

    Pick what matters

When the app launches, install it on your iPhone or Android phone and choose: photos, the folders you want, contacts, your mailbox. Nothing else leaves your phone.

  2. 2

    It runs on its own

New photos and files are encrypted and copied in the background; email every few hours. Nobody has to remember.

  3. 3

    Get it back

New phone, deleted file or lost laptop: restore everything, or bring back one document from version history.

What it costs

Prepaid, minimum ₹200 a month

You pay for the storage you use at the rates of the two providers you choose, with a ₹200 monthly minimum. Top up by UPI, card or net banking. No auto-debit, no card on file. Prices exclude 18% GST. How pricing works.
